Erdoğan lauds democracy’s victory in municipal elections

Erdoğan lauds democracy’s victory in municipal elections

As the election results largely wrapped up, President Erdoğan spoke to supporters at his AK Party’s headquarters early Monday, thanking them for their support and the prevalence of democracy in the country

In his first speech following the municipal elections on Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) chairperson, hailed what he called the victory of democracy.

Addressing a crowd gathered outside AK Party headquarters in the capital Ankara, Erdoğan stated that the nation exhibited its will in the ballots, without encountering any restraints and that it was a major gain for Turkish democracy.

“The victor of this election is democracy, the nation’s will, regardless of political views of the electorate,” he said.

As Erdoğan took to the balcony of the party building per post-election tradition, loudspeakers blared with an old campaign song of the AK Party emphasizing the unity of Türkiye.

“We concluded the March 31 elections with a maturity appropriate for our democracy. There weren’t any incidents that would overshadow the elections. But we witnessed servants of a separatist organization engaging in acts of pressure and insults toward citizens in the east and southeast,” he said, referring to the PKK terrorist group.

“Thanks to the common sense of our citizens, Turkish democracy proved its maturity again. Elections are the most critical days of democracies and people voice their choice through ballots,” he said.

The president termed March 31 as “a turning point, not an end.”

“The Turkish nation gave its message to the politicians. The winner of this election is Türkiye as a whole. The winner is democracy. We paid a high price for its sake,” he said.

World’s 1st ‘waterfront library’ opens in Istanbul’s Beykoz

World’s 1st ‘waterfront library’ opens in Istanbul’s Beykoz

In a bid to foster a culture of reading and learning while embracing the serene beauty of the Bosporus, the Municipality of Beykoz has inaugurated the “Yalı (Mansion) Library” at a seafront location. The library, operational round the clock, seven days a week, boasts a rich collection and modern amenities.

Perched with a panoramic view of the Bosporus, the Yalı Library accommodates up to 120 individuals simultaneously, offering a tranquil yet dynamic space for studying and exploration. With shelves adorned with 11,000 books, including publications sourced from Beykoz Library and Istanbul Library Corner, the space aims to cater to diverse literary tastes.

Cihan Yıldız, the general coordinator responsible for education at the Municipality of Beykoz, expressed his enthusiasm about the project in an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA). Yıldız revealed that the library commenced operations on March 12 and has since witnessed significant footfall, welcoming approximately 9,000 visitors.

He attributed this success to the library’s unique offerings and emphasized its accessibility to all Istanbul residents, regardless of social status.

“We operate with an online reservation system and provide 24-hour service. We offer services such as soup, bagels, tea and lemonade in our free cafeteria area for our users.”

Emphasizing that all Istanbul residents who become members can benefit from the libraries, Yıldız noted:

“Our Mayor Murat Aydın has initiated many firsts. Yalı Library is unique in this field. Since the Istanbul Bosporus is unique in the world, I believe that a library with such a sea view and in a mansion format is unique both in the world and in Türkiye. It was our mayor’s idea. Mansions are, unfortunately, structures in our social life that are more accessible to the upper class, even buildings where ordinary citizens cannot see the sea view due to their walls. We broke this barrier. We opened a mansion for everyone’s use regardless of their social status. In this respect, it became a very valuable project.”

Yıldız stated that after the transformation of the mansion, previously used as a sports club management building, into a library, they received positive feedback from young people:

“Let me share a short anecdote from a conversation between our mayor and a young person. A high school student came with his friends. He said, ‘Mayor, I had never studied before, but I decided to start studying from today.’ We receive positive feedback. For example, we have a medical faculty student here. Despite having a library closer to his home, he says, ‘Sir, when I feel overwhelmed, I look at the sea, I feel refreshed, motivated. I reset and start studying again.’ I believe that even gazing at the sea refreshes the human soul, creating a positive impact.”

Book lovers of all ages who want to study and read can benefit from the library by making an appointment at any time of the day. Visitors can also borrow their selected works for 15 days through online appointments.

Beykoz’s position

During the Ottoman era, the area beyond Beykoz consisted of vast countryside and forests primarily utilized for hunting and as a retreat from urban life by the Sultans and their entourage. The hunting lodge at Küçüksu, along with the ornate fountains and mosques embellishing the villages along the coastline, originated from this period. The name “Beykoz” emerged during this epoch, believed to stem from “bey,” signifying prince, lord or gentleman and “koz,” possibly derived from the Persian word for village or referencing a type of walnut.

The coastal road along the Bosporus extends to Beykoz from Beylerbeyi (below the Bosporus Bridge), with additional routes leading down to the coast from the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. Access to the district is also facilitated by ferry services from Eminönü and Beşiktaş. Smaller boats operate from Yeniköy to Beykoz, Bebek, or Emirgan, connecting to the neighborhoods of Kanlıca and Anadolu Hisarı.

Among the notable landmarks from the Bosporus to Beykoz are Küçüksu Palace, an exquisite example of an Ottoman imperial hunting lodge; Anadolu Hisarı Castle, an ancient fortification erected by the Ottomans to secure the Bosporus during military campaigns; and the more recent Khedive Palace, constructed in 1907 as a vacation residence for the Khedive of Egypt, now repurposed as a restaurant within a scenic park. Kanlıca and Anadolu Hisarı are quaint villages boasting waterfront cafes that attract tourists.

Turkish Marbling Workshop – Ebru Lessons in Istanbul

Turkish Marbling Workshop – Ebru Lessons in Istanbul

Turkish Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone, hence the name. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper (or other surfaces such as fabric). In Ebru art, you can draw flower figures that are traditional from the Ottoman period BUT the things that you can capable of using Ebru art is unlimited. All you need is your imagination.

Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper. The special tools of the trade are brushes of horsehair bound to straight rose twigs, a deep tray made of unknotted pinewood, natural earth pigments, cattle gall and tragacanth. It is believed to be invented in the thirteenth century Turkistan. This decorative art then spread to China, India and Persia and Anatolia. Seljuk and Ottoman calligraphers and artists used marbling to decorate books, imperial decrees, official correspondence and documents.

TURKISH MARBLING, EBRU

Marbled paper, called ebru in Turkish, was used extensively in the binding of books and within the calligraphic panels in Turkey. The existing word ebre in Eastern Turkish, meaning variegated, points to the fact that marbling might have been known by the populations of Central Asia. Its origin might ultimately hark back to China, where a document from the T’ang dynasty (618-907) mentions a process of coloring paper on water with five hues. In the early examples from the 16th c. in the Ottoman-Turkish era, ebru appears in the battal (stone) form, namely without any manipulation. Interestingly, several variations developed in time, giving us types such as gelgit, tarakli, hatip, bülbül yuvasi, çiçekli (respectively come-and-go, combed, preacher, nightingale’s nest, flowered, etc.) An attempt has been made here to show some of its principal patterns, with samples by the master marblers of this century chosen from our collection.

Ebru technique consists of sprinkling colours containing a few drops of ox-gall on to the surface of the bath sized with kitre (gum tragacanth) in a trough. By carefully laying the paper over the bath, the floating picture on top of it is readily transferred to the paper; thus, each ebru is a one of a kind print. To obtain beautiful ebru results, one needs to have a light hand, refined taste, and an open mind to the unexpected patterns forming on the water. Patience and a good knowledge of traditional culture are characteristic of ebru masters.

After the 1550’s, booklovers in Europe prized ebru, which came to be known as ‘Turkish papers’. Many specimens in their collections and in the several album amicorum books are visible today in various museums. Also, early texts dealing with ebru, such as “Discourse on decorating paper in the Turkish manner”, published in 1664 by Athanasius Kircher in Rome, helped to disseminate the knowledge of this kind of marbling art. There is agreement amongst scholars that the so-called Turkish Papers played a colourful influence on the book arts in Europe.

How to do Turkish Marbling?

Colored paste, made from flour and water (1:4) or other cold water paste and colored with watercolor or tempera paint, is spread onto paper and patterns are drawn with fingers, sticks, combs, or anything else at hand.

What is Turkish water Marbling?

Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of creating colourful patterns by sprinkling and brushing colour pigments onto a pan of oily water and then transferring the patterns to paper.

How to make Turkish Ebru?

In traditional Ebru, paint is dripped onto the surface of water and a fine brush or metal comb is used to create marbled patterns. After a pattern is created, a piece of paper is gently laid on the surface of the water. The paint adheres to the paper, creating a marbled masterpiece.

What is the Turkish term for paper Marbling?

The art of marbling on paper, or ‘ebru‘ in Turkish, is a traditional decorative form employing special methods. The word ‘ebru’ comes from the Persian word ‘ebr,’ meaning ‘cloud.

What does Ebru mean in Turkish?

Ebru is the contemporary Turkish word for what is called marbled paper in English.

What is the method of Marbling?

Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fabric.

Can I use acrylic paint for Marbling?

Overall, you can use whatever paints you want to use, but if you haven’t done much marbling it tends to be helpful to use just one type of paint and not mix Heavy Body with Fluids and High Flow Acrylics.

MARBLING APPLIED TO PAPER PATTERNS

Classical Types of Ebru;

1- Battal – Stone: The oldest recorded style in Ebru. It is the base of all forms in paper marbling art. The paints stay as they drop off the brush no other effect is given.

2- Gel Git – Tidal : After having a battal base, it is formed by zigzag movements parallel to the sides of the basin. This tidal movement is sometimes applied diagonally as well.

3- Şal – Shawl : Formed by an evenly spreading of two or three ‘S’ shapes on a tidal ebru in the opposite direction of the last tidal move.

4- Bülbül Yuvası – Nightingale Nest : Formed by inside to outside spiral movements next to each other on a battal ebru.

5- Taraklı – Combed : A vertically made tidal ebru is combed in the opposite direction of the last tidal movement.

6- Kumlu – Sandy : Formed by continuously dropping of low density paint on an extremely thickened basin and letting the work sit for a long time. The surface tension is high in an extremely thickened basin. The low-density paint is going to be pressured under the high tension of the surface and after a while crack and form the sandy or bony ebru.

7- Hafif – Light : Paints are diluted more than in other ebru types. Light ebru is usually used as a base to perform calligraphy.

8- Hatip – Orator : Motifs are formed by giving movement effects to the paints that are distributed evenly within each other on the surface. Colors at the background are light, motif colors are intense.

9- Dalgalı – Wavy : When the paper is moved back and forth during the marbling, the result will appear as waves on the paper. The paper can be folded, (creases point the surface) when each move contacts with a crease it will change direction and will form the waves on the paper. Waves can be formed only if the movement has a regular rhythm.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=3YEkw43u8kw%3Fstart%3D9%26feature%3Doembed

10- Neftli Battal –Turpentine: This is obtained by sprinkling paints with some added drops of Turpentine (preferably pine turpentine) onto a ‘Battal’ background. It gives a wavy appearance.

11- Somaki Battal – Porphyry: Generally made with two color. More gall is added to the second color, which squeezes the first color and creates thin veins, like marble.

12 – Serpmeli Battal – Sprayed: After any well known “Battal marbling” is made, a second color, in contrast to the background, is sprinkled is small droplets. The paint in the brush is squeezes out carefully, and some people use a special brush for sprinkling. This sprinkling may be formed in ‘Gel-Git’ – ‘ Bülbül Yuvası’ or other patterns.

13- Ak Kase – Stenciled Marbling: This is a pattern obtained by making several imprints on the same background, and popular with calligraphers. The base consist of a ‘light marbling upon which the script is written using a special fluid prepared with gum Arabic applied with a red pen or brush. Thus the surface of the light marbling is covered (insulated) by the gum Arabic. After drying, another design using darker colors is applied on the same paper: the parts covered with gum Arabic will resist the second coat and will therefore display the script. The same technique may be applied using a stencil, and other substances can be used instead of gum Arabic, for example, heavy gum tragacanth, silicone, several transparent types of glue, etc.

14- Yazılı Ebru – Script Marbling: This is obtained by writing the script with gum Arabic and then marbling the same paper, or vice versa (Leaving the script blank and applying the gum Arabic as background). Writing with gum Arabic (Transparent ink) demands particular skill, because it is very difficult to make corrections.

Ramadan Visitors Can Now See Prophet Muhammad’s Cloak

Ramadan Visitors Can Now See Prophet Muhammad’s Cloak

Hırka-i Şerif,” one of the sacred relics gifted by the Prophet Muhammad to Uwais al-Qarni, a Muslim from South Arabia who lived during the prophet’s lifetime, will open its doors to visitors at 10 a.m. on the upcoming Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, as is the tradition every year for Muslims.

The relic can be visited on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Ramadan, which is considered the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, and from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends.

The sacred cloak has been preserved at the Hırka-ı Şerif Mosque, built in Istanbul’s historical Fatih district in 1851. It is protected by the 58th and 59th generation descendants of al-Qarni.

The cloak will be on display until the eve of Ramadan Bayram (Eid al-Fitr), the Islamic holiday that marks the end of the holy month.

Al-Qarni, a Yemeni native, traveled to Madinah al-Munawwarah to see the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century but had to return to Yemen due to his mother’s illness without seeing the prophet. Impressed by his story of filial piety, the prophet gifted his cloak to al-Qarni via companions and he received the garment in Yemen.

One of the early believers, al-Qarni, died some 24 years after the prophet and fought in the Muslim army during the time of Caliph Ali. Al-Qarni had no children and the relic was passed down to his brother, which is still protected by the same family. The al-Qarni family lived in southern Anatolia for centuries; however, they later migrated to Kuşadası in the Aegean region.

In the 17th century, Ottoman Sultan Ahmet I asked them to bring the holy relic to Istanbul, where other sacred relics of Islam were being preserved. After the cloak was taken to Istanbul, two keys were made, one for the sultan and one for the al-Qarni family, for the locked box in which the cloak was displayed.

Türkiye-Run Tokyo Mosque draws Japanese crowd for Ramadan iftars

Türkiye-Run Tokyo Mosque draws Japanese crowd for Ramadan iftars

Tokyo Mosque, affiliated with the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), brings together Muslims and non-Muslim Japanese people for iftars during Ramadan.

The non-Muslim Japanese, who participate in the cultural tour of the mosque campus during the day, eat their iftar with hundreds of Muslims and learn about Islam.

A Japanese citizen named Iwata said that he had been to the mosque before, adding: “Eating together is enjoyable. I come every year. I don’t think I can experience such an atmosphere anywhere else in Japan.”

“I like the atmosphere here. There is no building like this in Japan. When I come here, it feels like I am in Türkiye.”

Iwata stated that in Japan, there is a local belief in “a similar fast in which you drink water but do not eat food.”

“I feel a sense of unity during Ramadan,” said Nanbaryuu, a university student living in the capital. He said he visited the Tokyo Mosque because he liked the Islamic culture he had learned about in a Muslim country he had visited before.

Another visitor, Saito, also stated that he lived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for five years and has never fasted before, but he likes “the idea and ambiance of iftar gatherings” in the mosque.

“It is great to know various cultures,” said a secondary school student named Kanon. Kanon stated that he came to the mosque for the first time and felt for the first time what the month of Ramadan in Islam means.

Kanon described it as “happy” that both fasting and non-fasting people are invited to the iftars at the mosque.

Stating that “Islamic culture can be touched” by coming to Tokyo Mosque, Kanon said, “I think it is useful to see the prayers and get to know various cultures.”

Adem Levent, who took over his new position as the imam of Tokyo Mosque in February, said, “Our guests on weekdays are 400-500 on average and this number rises to 700 on weekends.” He stated that the interest in the mosque has increased due to the month of Ramadan.

Levent stated that they received Japanese guests with an appointment system, gave information about fasting and answered questions about Islam.

Explaining that the Japanese people show great interest in Mukabele (a traditional recitation of the Holy Quran during Ramadan) before the evening prayer, Levent said: “Sitting at the iftar table and breaking the fast with us gives them a special feeling. They look around and ask with a smile on their faces why the fast is broken here collectively. They leave satisfied and thank us with a promise of visiting the mosque again.”

Stating that they performed Tarawih (prayers conducted during Ramadan) after the iftar, Levent said: “Last year I was in Bulgaria. This year I was blessed to be here. It is a very nice feeling that I could not have imagined.”

Ramadan Tradition: 3,350 Drummers to Wake Istanbul for Sahur

Ramadan Tradition: 3,350 Drummers to Wake Istanbul for Sahur

The longstanding practice of drumming to wake people before sahur during Muslims’ holy month of Ramadan will once again live throughout Istanbul, as at least 3,350 drummers will take to the streets in the upcoming 30 days, the chairperson of the Mukhtar’s association said on Sunday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Selami Aykut, who heads a federation of mukhtars in Istanbul in charge of traditional Ramadan drummers, expressed that Ramadan, the sultan of the eleven months, has many traditions that have been passed down from the past to the present.

He emphasized that waking up for sahur (pre-dawn meal) with drums is one of these traditions and that continuing this custom, which dates back to the Ottoman era, makes the citizens happy.

Aykut explained that, as in every Ramadan, drummers will also be on duty this year.

“Our drummers have completed their preparations to wake up our citizens for sahur during Ramadan. As in every year, our drummers, who receive training under the supervision of our muhtars, are eagerly awaiting the beginning of Ramadan,” noted Aykut.

Aykut emphasized that the mukhtars closely follow all stages of preparation, from the drummers’ attire to the many (traditional verses recited during Ramadan), and continued: “Our mukhtars pay attention to certain criteria when selecting drummers. For example, it is required that the individuals who perform drumming in a neighborhood during Ramadan reside in that specific area.”

“We also pay attention to whether these individuals have previously performed in the same neighborhood. We want the drummers to wear attire that suits the culture of Ramadan, and we ensure that they do so,” he noted.

“Our drummers are very happy and excited about the coming of Ramadan. We have 964 neighborhoods in Istanbul. Approximately 3,350 drummers will be on duty in the city during this Ramadan,” he informed.

The Prophet Muhammad ( SAW ) said: “Verily you shall conquer Constantinople.
What a wonderful  leader its leader shall be, and what a wonderful army that army will be!” (Musnad Ahmad).

Istanbul is the center of religion for centuries. After the ottoman period Islamic Religion spreaded througout the city. The first mosque in Istanbul was built in Kadikoy on the Asian side of the city, which was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

The first mosque on the European side of Istanbul was built inside the Rumeli Castle in 1452. The first grand mosque which was built in the city proper is the Eyup Sultan Mosque (1458), while the first imperial mosque inside the city walls was the Fatih Mosque (1470) which was built on the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles, an important Byzantine church which was originally edificed in the time of Constantine the Great.

Many other imperial mosques were built in the following centuries, such as the famous Suleymaniye Mosque (1557) which was ordered by Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the great Ottoman architect Sinan, and the famous Sultan Ahmet Mosque (1616) which is also known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles which adorn its interior. Istanbul was the final seat of the Islamic Caliphate, between 1517 and 1924.
