The Prophet Muhammad ( SAW ) said: “Verily you shall conquer Constantinople.
What a wonderful  leader its leader shall be, and what a wonderful army that army will be!” (Musnad Ahmad).

Istanbul is the center of religion for centuries. After the ottoman period Islamic Religion spreaded througout the city. The first mosque in Istanbul was built in Kadikoy on the Asian side of the city, which was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

The first mosque on the European side of Istanbul was built inside the Rumeli Castle in 1452. The first grand mosque which was built in the city proper is the Eyup Sultan Mosque (1458), while the first imperial mosque inside the city walls was the Fatih Mosque (1470) which was built on the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles, an important Byzantine church which was originally edificed in the time of Constantine the Great.

Many other imperial mosques were built in the following centuries, such as the famous Suleymaniye Mosque (1557) which was ordered by Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the great Ottoman architect Sinan, and the famous Sultan Ahmet Mosque (1616) which is also known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles which adorn its interior. Istanbul was the final seat of the Islamic Caliphate, between 1517 and 1924.

Activities

Religion In Turkey Islam is the largest religion of Turkey. Around 90% percent of the population is registered as Muslim, mostly Sunni. The Shia Alevi community, a distinct Muslim sect, makes up 20% of the population. Christians (Oriental Orthodoxy, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic) and Jews (Sephardi), who comprise the non-Muslim population have dramatically declined since the early 19th century onwards from 20% to less than 1% today, and are continuing to steadily decline since the year 2000 as well. Turkey is officially a secular country with no official religion since the constitutional amendment in 1924 and later strengthened in the Kemalist Ideology, alongside the Atatürk’s reforms and the appliance of laïcité by Atatürk at the end of 1937. However, currently all public schools from elementary to high school hold mandatory religion classes which only focus on the Sunni sector of Islam. In these classes, children are required to learn prayers and other religious practices which belong specifically to Sunnism. Thus, although Turkey claims to be a Secular state, the enforcement of secularism in public grade schools is controversial. Its application to join the EU divided existing members, some of which questioned whether a Muslim country could fit in. Turkey accused its EU opponents of favouring a “Christian club”. Beginning in the 1980s, the role of religion in the state has been a divisive issue, as influential factions challenged the complete secularization called for by Kemalism and the observance of Islamic practices experienced a substantial revival. In the early 2000s, Islamic groups challenged the concept of the secular state with increasing vigor after the Erdoğan government had calmed the issue in 2003. The Turkish Government states that between 90% – 95% of the population belong to the Islamic Majority, but recent polls do not concur. In the most recent poll conducted by Sabanci University, 83% of Turks revealed they were Muslim. Of that, 16% said they were “extremely religious”, 39% saying they were “somewhat religious”, and 32% saying they were “not religious”. 3% of Turks declare themselves with no religious beliefs. In addition, only 13% of Turks have a favourable opinion of Christians, and 10% of Jews. Islam is the religion with the largest community of followers in the country, where most of the population is nominally Muslim, of whom over 75% belong to the Sunni branch of Islam. Over 20% of the Muslim population is Shia Alevi. There is also a small Bektashi community belonging to a Sufi order of Islam that is indigenous to Turkey, but also has numerous followers in the Balkan peninsula. More Recent Poll numbers show that Islam in Turkey is slowly declining. Islam arrived in the region that comprises present-day Turkey, particularly the eastern provinces of the country, as early as the 7th century AD. The mainstream Hanafi school of Sunni Islam is largely organized by the state, through the Religious Affairs Directorate, which was established in 1924 following the abolition of the Caliphate and controls all mosques and Muslim clerics, and is officially the highest religious authority in the country. As of today, there are thousands of historical mosques throughout the country which are still active. Notable mosques built in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods include the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, the Yeşil Mosque in Bursa, the Alaeddin Mosque and Mevlana Mosque in Konya, and the Great Mosque in Divriği, among many others. Large mosques built in the Republic of Turkey period include the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara and the Sabancı Mosque in Adana. The mainstream Hanafite school of Sunni Islam is largely organised by the state, through the Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi (Religious Affairs Directorate), which controls all mosques and Muslim clerics. The directorate is criticized by some Alevi Muslims for not supporting their beliefs and instead favoring the Sunni faith. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople (Patrik) is the head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Turkey, and also serves as the spiritual leader of all Orthodox churches throughout the world. The Armenian Patriarch is the head of the Armenian Church in Turkey, while the Jewish community is led by the Hahambasi, Turkey’s Chief Rabbi, based in Istanbul. All these groups share the same criticism of the directorate.

Experience infamous Turkish hospitality directly from the heart of an authentic Turkish home in Istanbul . Spend a day learning to make traditional Baklava in a warm, loving environment. The steps will be explained and translated by a guide who will accompany you during your learning, and will be demonstrated with love and care by knowledgeable housewives. Despite the workshop being flexible with timings, we usually start at 10:00 or 10 : 30 am.

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Sefakoy, a stunning example of a modern Turkish neighbourhood within Istanbul. Your day will consist of 3-4 hours of creating the baklava. After this, while the baklava is being cooked, our guide will take you to Aqua Florya for 1 – 1.5 hours of free time in which you can relax, shop and sightsee to your heart’s content on the sea front.

After a short 15 minute drive back to the kitchen, you will learn how to make the syrup that is poured over the baklava to give it its finishing touch.

The baklava is then delivered to your hotel the next morning once it is 100% ready, as the syrup needs time to cool and seep into each layer of the baklava. And there you have it! A unique skill and a home that will stay with you for a lifetime …

What is Baklava ;

You must taste baklava during your stay in Istanbul. The recipe may sound too easy to be true: chopped nuts are spread in between the phyllo (yufka) layers, dressed with butter, baked and sweetened with syrup or honey. But the excellence depends on the quality of the flour, the thinness of the dough (phyllo) and the proportion of the syrup.

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry featured in many cuisines of the former Ottoman countries. It is a pastry made of layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped walnuts or pistachios and sweetened with syrup or honey.

Whirling Dervish Ceremony in a Real Monastery

Whirling Dervish Ceremony In Istanbul – Silivrikapi
Sufi Cultures & Whirling Dervish Ceremony in a Monastery

Idea : During this Monastery visit & Dervish Ceremony; you will see the story of Sufism, Sufism and their communities in Istanbul, Turkey, today. You will meet the Sufi community and their monastery, listen to their music, eye-witness the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony. The ceremonies are presented every Thursdays.

Known to the west as Whirling Dervishes, the Mevlevi Order was founded by Mevlana Rumi in the 13th century. The Order wrote of tolerance, forgiveness, and enlightenment. They survive today as a cultural brotherhood. They are not theatrical spectacles but sacred rituals. The ritual of the Mevlevi sect, known as the sema, is a serious religious ritual performed by Muslim priests in a prayer trance to Allah. Mevlevi believed that during the sema the soul was released from earthly ties, and able to freely and jubilantly commune with the divine. Dervish literally means “doorway” and is thought to be an entrance from this material world to the spiritual, heavenly world. The Whirling Dervishes played an important part in the evolution of Ottoman high culture.

From the fourteenth to the twentieth century, their impact on classical poetry, calligraphy and visual arts was profound. Rumi and his followers integrated music into their rituals as an article of faith. Rumi emphasized that music uplifts our spirit to realms above, and we hear the tunes of the Gates of Paradise.

The ceremony is in a real monastery in on Thursday evenings

Buses

There is an extensive network of inexpensive and reliable public and private bus (otobüs) services throughout Istanbul. Regular buses charge a standard fixed rate, while express buses to longer destinations may cost double. The Istanbul Card works on all public and private buses, and short-term passes can be purchased in most transportation hubs (metro and ferry stations) and at many kiosks around the city.

Ferries (Vapur)

Ferries are one of the most convenient and enjoyable modes of transportation in Istanbul. The city offers municipal and private boats to ferry you to various points on either side of the Bosphorus and also to the Princes’ Islands. On municipal boats, you may use your Istanbul Card or tokens are available inside the stations. Private boats run more frequently and the more popular locations now accept Istanbul Cards. If they are not equipped for Istanbul Card, then you can easily pay the fare at the kiosk before boarding.

Tram

The metro is connected to Istanbul’s light rail system via the tunnel funicular trains at Taksim and Tünel located at either end of Istiklal Boulevard. The tram and light rail systems  cover a significant part of Istanbul, both the European and Asian sides. Routes and timetables can be found on the Istanbul Ulaşım website .

Metro (Subway)

There is a modest but continually expanding subway system  servicing many parts of the city. Tokens are available inside the stations or you may use your Istanbul Card. Routes and timetables can be found on the Istanbul Ulaşım website .

MetroBus

Metrobüs is the name of Istanbul’s rapid transit bus (BRT) system implemented and operated in Istanbul, Turkey. The name Metrobüs was coined by the transit agency to suggest that this system is a hybrid between a metro train and a bus. The system operates through its own fully separated right-of-way lane between Avcılar and Zincirlikuyu, the western end of the Bosphorus Bridge, and also between Söğütlüçeşme and the eastern end of the Bosphorus Bridge. The buses travel on the Bridge in mixed traffic.

Dolmuş and Mini-buses

Some main routes are also served by private mini-buses (‘dolmuş’), which are a cross between a bus and taxi. They follow specific, fixed routes, but passengers can get off anywhere along the route. Destinations are listed on a placard on the outside of the dolmuş. The cost is determined by distance travelled: when getting on, tell the driver your destination and he will tell you how much it will cost. Often he will make change while he is driving, so hold on!  To indicate you want to disembark, you will say, “inecek var” (IN-eh-JEK var). These minibuses do NOT accept Istanbul Card.

Another type of private mini-bus is used for longer express trips (for example, between Kadiköy and Taksim square). These mini-buses have a fixed price listed when you get in, and generally only stop at a couple of drop-off points close to the final destination. These mini-buses depart once they are full.

Taxi

Except during rush-hour and heavy rain, private, metered taxis are easy to find, and their fares are less than in most European and American cities. Know, too, that traffic in Istanbul can be very heavy, and that it can take a long time to travel even a short distance. Very few taxi drivers speak English or other foreign languages. They all have meters and receipts can be given if asked (a receipt is called fiş, pronounced “fish”). Very few if any taxis have credit card machines, so always make sure you are carrying enough cash. If you travel via the TEM highway (toll road) or across the Bosphorus bridges (in either direction), the toll fees are extra and you will be expected to pay this. Tipping is not necessary; it is sufficient to round up your fare to the nearest Lira (e.g., 7.68 TL = 7 TL). Fares start with a fixed base rate and then increase with a rate per kilometer. Until you have your choice Turkish phrases memorized, it’s a good idea to write down where you’re going to (or have someone else do it) and show the name/address to the driver to avoid any potential confusion. Make sure the taxi driver you take knows the location of your desired destination before you get in. Occasionally drivers will try to scam customers by going a long way. Knowing the taxi number, and having the driver know that you know it is a good deterrent to taxi fraud. The taxi number is located on the side/roof/license plate of all taxis (e.g., 34 TEB 29).

Intercity Buses

The intercity bus service is cheap, comfortable, and extremely efficient. The onboard service is similar to that of airplanes in that stewards frequently offer drinks and snacks. The more reliable companies are Varan, Pamukkale, Nilüfer, Metro and Ulusoy. Most of these intercity buses have prohibited smoking on the buses. The buses stop at their own company-owned restaurants and pit-stops which are generally clean and comfortable.

Their branches are mostly located on the Barbaros Street in Beşiktaş (across the main street) as well as other center (Taksim etc.).

Istanbul Sahaba Tours Visits

Full Day Sahaba Tour in Istanbul

The Prophet Muhammad ( SAW ) said: “Verily you shall conquer Constantinople.
What a wonderful  leader its leader shall be, and what a wonderful army that army will be!” (Musnad Ahmad).

Istanbul is the center of religion for centuries. After the ottoman period Islamic Religion spreaded througout the city. The first mosque in Istanbul was built in Kadikoy on the Asian side of the city, which was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1353.

The personal belongings of Mohammed and the earliest Caliphs who followed him are today preserved in the Topkapı Palace, the Eyup Sultan Mosque and in several other prominent mosques of Istanbul.
